Seneca Rocks is a community landmark in Pendleton County, West Virginia. Seneca Rocks is also a favorite mountain climbing location. During World War II, army mountain troops trained on Seneca Rocks as well as other rocky crags in the area. In 1965, Congress created the 100,000-acre Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area.

Spruce knob is situated within this recreation area. It’s the highest point in the state of West Virginia. The view from on top of of Spruce Knob is inspiring It was one time covered with a dense forest of red spruce growing in a foot-thick layer of humus soil.

Geologically, Spruce Knob is made of a resistant base of Pennsylvanian Pottsville Sandstone . The parking area at Spruce Knob includes a half-mile Whispering Spruce Trail leading around the knob featuring its breathtaking vistas. There are numerous other hiking trails within the immediate vicinity.

Quite a few cabin rentals are centrally located within the recreation area to help you take advantage of the area’s sight-seeing opportunities. No stay at any of the Seneca Rocks cabins is complete without checking out the Smoke Hole Caverns.

Smoke Hole Caverns is situated just minutes from Seneca Rocks. This is a great place to visit year-round. The temperatures inside of Smoke Hole Caverns is approximately fifty-six degrees, which reflects the average annual temperature in the region.

The Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area is some of the finest of West Virginia’s mountain majesty. Come enjoy this stunning area for yourself.
